Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) and Republican JD Vance, a venture capitalist and author of the book “Hillbilly Elegy,” won their party’s nominations to run for Ohio’s open Senate seat. They will compete for Ohio’s U.S. Senate Seat in November.
Vance is the final winner with 236,450 votes – 31.5% of Republican ballots cast –and 78% of precincts reporting on May 3.
Vance defeated former state treasurer Josh Mandel, another far-right politician who was assumed to be the frontrunner for the primary nod. Mandel has 190,600 votes, or 24%, as of press time.
A substantial amount of Bitcoin is owned by Vance. He also has backing by Peter Thiel, who recently shared his views on the moral imperative for bitcoin adoption, and shamed crypto-skeptical financial leaders.
Vance secured a footnote in crypto-politics history with a single tweet proclaiming his vision for Ohio: “pro-God, pro-family, pro-bitcoin” after endorsed in the primary by former president Donald Trump, winning Josh Mandel, who served as a state representative and state treasurer (he implemented the program to pay taxes in crypto)
Keep Innovation in America Act, a crypto-friendly bill designed to maintain reasonable tax reporting requirements was co-sponsored by Ryan. On the primary ballot on May 3, Ryan faced only two other Democrats. Progressive attorney Morgan Harper has 72,269 votes and 17.4%, while former civil servant and business owner Traci “TJ” Johnson has 51,000 and 12% of the vote. Democrat Rep Tim Ryan has nearly 269,000 votes, a total of 70.5% of party ballots. With 60% of precincts reporting, many have called Ryan as the winner.
Ryan has served 10 terms in congress and was the leading candidate throughout the primary campaign.
