Ever since the launch of Lisk, this so called blockchain application platform has been covered in confusion and misconception about what Lisk actually is and what can Lisk really achieve. This is because the developer of Lisk did not release any whitepaper or vision paper upon the release of the project. This article is dedicated to clear some misunderstandings that were popular among the community and explain what Lisk really is and isn’t.

Let’s get started on some of the most prominent misunderstanding and myth on Lisk. Firstly, there is rumour about Lisk being a fork of Ethereum. This is absolutely untrue as Lisk is actually a  fork from Crypti project Oliver instead of Ethereum. Secondly, some people associated Lisk with insecure as Lisk is written in JavaScript. This is a huge misconception even though JavaScript is often known as a weakly typed language.  It is undeniable that the language of the programmer used plays a vital role but the developers at Lisk prioritise the responsible of writing a secure code. It is also true that the developers of Lisk could have chosen other programming language with a stronger typed nature to reduce the possibilities of writing bad code, however those choices could come with some serious trade-offs. The primary reason to choose JavaScript is that it could run virtually any platform and the fact that it has an extremely large and ever-increasing developer space contributed to the choice as well.

So, what exactly is Lisk? Lisk is sidechain development platform which allows developers to establish and deploy Dapps (Decentralized application) easily using JavaScript. To vastly simplify it, Lisk provides a blockchain-based application platform similar to Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store which allow virtually any developers to build and distribute their app. The key difference that lies between these two are the fact that Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store hold complete control on their respective app stores while Lisk do not. Lisk does not hold complete control on the blockchain Dapps platform because it is decentralized and run across large amount of computers which resides on the Public blockchain.
