According to research conducted by NFT Club, about 4 million trees are necessary to offset CryptoKitties’ carbon emissions. The company looked at an NFT’s energy use during its lifetime to figure out how many trees would be needed to offset its emissions. It also took into account the number of top-selling collections. CryptoKitties has produced approximately 240 million kilograms of carbon dioxide, according to its research. The environmental cost of NFTs is a hot topic in the business. According to NFT Club, “an average NFT produces 211kg of carbon dioxide” throughout a lifetime owing to NFT minting and purchasing. A single tree is capable of absorbing 60 kilograms of CO2. As a result, “to offset the life of an NFT,” it takes 3.52 trees.

According to the NFT Club, minting an NFT produces 83kg of carbon. This is because tens of thousands of miners attempt to verify the transaction. Regrettably, emissions do not stop with minting. Every time someone submits a bid for an NFT, 23kg of CO2 is released into the atmosphere. Furthermore, each NFT sale emits 51kg of CO2. Finally, each NFT transmission emits 30 kg of CO2. Furthermore, secondary NFT sales emit an extra 81 kg of CO2. To counterbalance the carbon produced here, 1.35 trees are required.

NFT Club discovered the top five NFT collections with the highest carbon emissions by considering all of the above parameters. Sorare is second after producing 35 million kg of CO2, while CryptoKitties is first. To counteract this, 580,337 trees would be required. Axie Infinity and Art Blocks take the next two places, which produce 27 million kg of CO2 and 23.1 million kg of CO2, respectively. While the former requires 461,951 trees to offset the carbon produced, the latter requires 385,451 trees. Finally, to offset 11.6 million kg of carbon emissions, The Sandbox requires 192,912 trees.
